Description
This book traces the formation and expansion of the art collection of the Pio di Savoia family of Carpi. The fortunes of the collection obviously reflect those of the family, which transferred to Ferrara after ruling over Carpi. From the end of the seventeenth century, the power of the family continued to decline. In 1750 prince Giberto Pio di Savoia requested permission from Pope Benedict XIV Lambertini to export his paintings to Madrid, which had become the main seat of the family. The pope granted the favour although he retained 126 paintings, the original nucleus of the Capitoline gallery collection.
