Description
Authentication of three paintings from the Foresti of Carpi collection as works of Andrea Mantegna should cause something of a sensation. Of the three tempera grassa paintings on wood panels representing the Triumph of Neptune, one was practically unknown to the general public. The other two were known only to Mantegna scholars through photographs taken prior to cleaning. The tonality is an almost monochromatic, harmonious grisaille with a metallic appearance and many delicate highlights of gold leaf, according to a well-proven technique used by Andrea Mantegna on several occasions.
