The book covers the historical and artistic events of all three of the Carracci, from the joint direction of their Accademia to the sketches drawn by Ludovico and by the artists belonging to his Bolognese studio.
It is part of an ideal trilogy, where "La scuola dei Carracci: i seguaci di Annibale e Agostino" and "La scuola di Guido Reni" are sequels to this volume.
It is a single large archive made up of three volumes of over 1100 pages and 1240 illustrations, with critical and biographical essays about 65 artists along with updated lists of the currently known works, including the lost ones we have known about through literary sources.
