In the Classical Greece both Sosus and Hephaistion of Pergamon became famous for their mosaics depicting still lifes, or rather, objects or things referred to as xenia, which, in ancient Greece, was the way by which hosts expressed hospitality to their guests. This practice was so common that Vitruvius wrote about it in the Book VII of his treatise De Architectura “This is why artists called pictures representing the things which were sent to guests ‘xenia’” [...]
